CPR Blog
CPR is a chest compression and rescue breathing procedure. If someone is not circulating blood or breathing adequately, CPR will help to restore circulation of oxygen rich blood. Without oxygen, a brain can die within 8 minutes. One should perforn CPR for about 2 minutes before calling for help.CPR may be necessary for drowning, suffocation, poisoning, smoke inhalation, electrocution injuries, etc.
In babies or children, rubbing over the breastbone can help determine if there is any level of responsiveness. Meanwhile for older childrem or adults, the same process could be done by gently tapping the shoulders.
Before doing any of the process, one must determine if it is safe to approach the person. For example, if one person is electrocuted, make sure all electric currents are turned off to prevent further electrocution.
When approaching that person, make sure to evalutate whether the person is responsive. Look for sounds of mouth, eye opening, chest movement, and pulse. CPR is continued until of spontaneous circulation(ROSC) or is declared dead.

Quotes of Henrietta Lacks
- "'A knot'... 'It hurt something awful- when that man want to get with me, Sweet Jesus aren't them but some pains.'"(14). This is how Henrietta felt when she first found out something unusual about her cervix.
- "[Henrietta] found blood spotting her underwear when it wasn't her time of the month."(15). This is one of her symptom of her alignment.
- "Henrietta slid a finger inside herself and rubbed it across her cervix until she found... a hard lump, deep inside, as though someone had lodged a marble just to the left of the opening to her womb."(15). Henrietta self diagnosed her tumor in her cervix.
- "...the lump tested negative for syphilis..."(15). Her test result was negative.
- "daughter...is epileptic and can't talk..."(16). The environment she lived in was harsh.
- "...shiny and purple... so delicate, it bled at the slightest touch."(17). This is how the tumor was like.
- "Henrietta and Day woke each morning at four o' clock to milk the cows and feed the chicken..." Henrietta's childhood was harsh.

What I learned from other cancer brochure
Evelyn's cancer brochure is about neuroblastoma,a kind of brain cancer. What I learned from this brochure is this typical cancer is a childhood cancer that spreads very rapidly. Surprisingly, the tumor may vanish on its own. Other times, the tumor may mature and turn into a beign tumor which can be surgically removed. The symptoms of the disease has no difference with flu which are fever, pain, or diarrhea. Neuroblastomas usually starts next to the spinal cord and it is possible to spread to the skull, pelvis, face, legs, skin, etc. Until today, the cause of neuroblastoma is unknown. It hits about 1 outo of 100,000 children and it is more common in boys.

Bone Disease Letter
Dear Ms. Doris(my ballet teacher),
I am sorry I cannot take ballet anymore due to the fact I got osteopenia, a disease where my bone is thinner than usual due to bone mineral density is lower than normal. I know I have been learning ballet with you for so many years but unfortunately, I cannot dance for now unless my doctor makes an approval. I have never knew that I would get such a bone disorder. I had no symptom until one day I tried to go en pointe with my demi pointe shoes(which I am not suppose to attempt) and heard a little crack sound on my ankle. I went to the doctor to get an x-ray and the doctor said my bones are getting unusually thin. Then he gave me a bone mineral density test (BMD) through dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry(DEXA) for further diagnosis. The doctor gave me an ankle brace that day so I would not move my ankles around that freely. The result came out a few days later and that is when I found out I have osteopenia. I do not know why I have osteopenia but I looked up the internet and it says that Caucasian and Asain have greater risk of getting osteopenia and people who eat more meat than vegetable have also the greater risk of getting this disorder. I should of eaten more vegetable and drank more milk as a child so that I would not have osteopenia. The only way osteopenia is treated is very slow. I will have to eat a lot of dairy products, green vegetables, and other calcium-enriched products. In addition, I will have to take calcium supplement that are combined with Vitamin D because it helps me absorb calcium and other minerals. Fortunately, I am under thirty year old so it is not too late for me to change my lifestyle. Hopefully, I can go back to your ballet class as soon as the doctor say I am able to resume ballet lesson!
Sincerely,
Cindy Wu
