Bone Disease Letter

Dear Ms. Doris(my ballet teacher),
I am sorry I cannot take ballet anymore due to the fact I got osteopenia, a disease where my bone is thinner than usual due to bone mineral density is lower than normal. I know I have been learning ballet with you for so many years but unfortunately, I cannot dance for now unless my doctor makes an approval. I have never knew that I would get such a bone disorder. I had no symptom until one day I tried to go en pointe with my demi pointe shoes(which I am not suppose to attempt) and heard a little crack sound on my ankle. I went to the doctor to get an x-ray and the doctor said my bones are getting unusually thin. Then he gave me a bone mineral density test (BMD) through dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry(DEXA) for further diagnosis. The doctor gave me an ankle brace that day so I would not move my ankles around that freely. The result came out a few days later and that is when I found out I have osteopenia. I do not know why I have osteopenia but I looked up the internet and it says that Caucasian and Asain have greater risk of getting osteopenia and people who eat more meat than vegetable have also the greater risk of getting this disorder. I should of eaten more vegetable and drank more milk as a child so that I would not have osteopenia. The only way osteopenia is treated is very slow. I will have to eat a lot of dairy products, green vegetables, and other calcium-enriched products. In addition, I will have to take calcium supplement that are combined with Vitamin D because it helps me absorb calcium and other minerals. Fortunately, I am under thirty year old so it is not too late for me to change my lifestyle. Hopefully, I can go back to your ballet class as soon as the doctor say I am able to resume ballet lesson!

                                                                  Sincerely,
                                                                 Cindy Wu
