Phytoestrogen is one kind of endocrine disruptor that is commonly found in cereals, berries, and mung beans. It acts like estrogen in human body. In some medicines, phytoestrogens are sometimes used to protect against hormone-dependent cancers. It can also reduce the risk of osteoporosis, heart disease, breast cancer, and menopausal symptoms. On the down side however, phytoestrogen could harm the reproductive health of males by acting as antiestrogens. Men excrete more enterolactone and less enterodiol than women when they ingest to much phytoestrogen. Phytoestrogen can also affect fertility of domestic animals. For example, if phytoestrogen in in hot, dry summer day, it can reduce the number of offsprings in wild population of quail.
